Use real trench photographs and the Battle of the Somme map to show students why World War I became a war of stalemate.

 

This one-day lesson helps students analyze trench warfare through visual and spatial evidence. Students examine primary-source photographs to interpret daily life, morale, and environmental hardship in the trenches. Then they study a Battle of the Somme map to evaluate strategy, casualties, and the limited territorial gains of industrial warfare.
