Long Story Short
In 1760, the British and their American colonies were all one big happy tea-drinking family. But war with the French had bankrupted the government. Seeing their colonies as a convenient ATM machine, they raised a few small taxes and caused an explosion of fury. As neither side could fully back down without losing face the colonies inched closer to war. Finally, the split came in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence and a rebellion that would create a new nation.
